Summer: critical period for egg production in Brazil
22/12/20215 points that should mark poultry production in 2022
17/01/2022Several commercial layer farms in the Central Mountainous region of the state of Espírito Santo presented a major challenge: the frequent presence of fowl typhoid in their production. The companies had to deal with high costs due to high mortality and the recurrent use of medication to try to contain the disease.
To solve the problem, the companies’ technical managers contacted Nutrisamal, Biocamp’s representative in the region, which made possible a specific vaccination program protocol for each farm against the disease. More details about this extremely relevant case in poultry health, you can find in this article.
The importance of egg production in Espirito Santo’s economy
The mountainous region of Espírito Santo is one of the largest egg producers in the country. According to data from IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), the municipality of Santa Maria de Jetibá alone sold in 2019, R$ 979 million of chicken eggs. There are about 16.4 million hens and 361.3 million dozen of eggs – corresponding to 7.82% of the entire national production.
This figure shows the importance of local production – and how much a disease in the field can be harmful to business and the local and national economy. Therefore, egg producing farms in Santa Maria do Jetibá sought Nutrisamal, which acts as Biocamp’s representative in the region, to be their strategic partner to overcome fowl typhoid. “The disease was frequent in layer hens in production, increasing farm expenses with the loss of chickens and the use of medication,” says Nutrisamal’s commercial-technical manager, Danilo de Oliveira Rocha Bhering Santoro.
Problem solved with vaccination program
To fight the frequent problem of fowl typhoid, farms used a vaccination program with CampVac® SG 9R Liquid, a vaccine developed by Biocamp. Every 10 to 15 weeks, the vaccine was supplied via drinking water to the entire flock on a preventive basis.
” The customers no longer waited for the problem to appear to perform the vaccination. They did it continuously, preventively,” says Danilo. The first results come after 6 months of using the protocol, but mainly after a year of continuous use of the vaccine.
As a result, there was a drastic reduction in the appearance of fowl typhoid.
After this period of use, in the few times that the disease appeared, it was possible to control it with alternative products and without the use of antibiotics. For the companies, it meant more income, more profitability, and more security.
Vaccination program in poultry production
CampVac® SG 9R is a live attenuated liquid vaccine that stimulates the poultry immune system to produce defense cells and antibodies against Salmonella Gallinarum (SG) bacteria. Cellular protection by T lymphocytes is the best immune barrier to fight the disease.
It provides:
This vaccine does not go through the freeze-drying process and shows great results via drinking water in continuous preventive use.
FOWL TYPHOID | ||
What is it? It is a disease of great importance and reason for attention to the laying poultry industry. It is estimated that the mortality rate in unvaccinated flocks, varies between 40 and 80% of the flock, causing great economic loss. It is more common in adult poultry, but affects any age. | Who causes it? The enteric subspecies serovar Salmonella Gallinarum, with the fecal-oral route being the main route of infection. Salmonella bacteria have two classifications: paratyphoid and typhoid. While the first group does not produce clinical signs or injuries, the second group (from Salmonella Gallinarum) is a cause for concern in layer hens. | What are the symptoms? Poultry affected by fowl typhoid stop feeding, become “shriveled up” and prostrate, may have tremor of the head and neck, and have yellow-green diarrhea. |
How is the diagnosis made? The diagnosis of fowl typhoid is made based on clinical, anatomical and pathological findings and laboratory tests. And, despite the septicemic condition, that is, the disease affects several organs at the same time, those in which the most changes are observed are the liver and the spleen. They have increased volume, thinning, and a color that varies from yellow to greenish-yellow or bronze-yellow. It is also possible to find hemorrhagic spots and yellowish-white spots – necrotic spots. The ovary may become congested, the gallbladder distended, the lung with whitish areas and the heart with whitish areas and hemorrhagic and necrotic spots. | What is the treatment for Fowl Typhoid? The antibiotic treatment decreases mortality temporarily, but it does not eliminate the bacterium from the flock. Once contaminated, the chickens remain with Salmonella Gallinarum and the disease can return at any moment – generally in stress situations. Biosecurity is a great ally in preventing and controlling an outbreak of fowl typhoid and vaccination, with live vaccine strain SG-9R, is essential. |
